Yuri And The Dragons

 Hello and welcome. I wonder if you're ready yet to imagine what it feels like to fly. Not in a plane or a rocket, but to fly like a bird up out of the room and into the most beautiful sky. So let's begin to prepare your body and prepare your mind. We have to harness the incredible power of your mind and the incredible power of your imagination. You can begin by taking a deep breath and letting your head and neck completely relax, finding the most comfortable place on the pillow and wriggling your shoulders until they feel comfortable too. And then you can take your attention to your spine and to your back, noticing how it feels. And again moving and moving, wriggling and shifting until you find the most comfortable position to feel completely relaxed. And the more comfortable you feel, the more relaxed you feel. And the more relaxed and the more comfortable you feel, the sleepier you begin to feel. And I wonder if you can begin to notice your breathing, how deeply and slowly your breathing comes, just by paying attention for three deep breaths. Noticing what your nose feels like as you breathe in. Noticing your mouth and tongue if you're breathing in through your mouth. And with each deep breath it's easy to relax now. And I wonder if you can feel your lungs expanding and growing bigger as your chest rises with each deep breath. And with each steady beat of your heart you relax even deeper. It almost feels as though you're filling a big balloon as you breathe in deeply and your chest fills with air. You might even like to think of a magic color that colors the air you're breathing in. Perhaps it's purple, blue, yellow, pink or green. And whatever your favorite healing color is, just imagine breathing it in. And that color is a sleepy color. It helps you to feel even more relaxed. It helps you to feel safe and really comfortable. And the more of that beautiful color you breathe in, the heavier your eyes feel and the more relaxed you feel. And as your eyes close softly and you hear the sounds of my voice, you may find yourself listening to this story. Or you may find yourself floating and drifting and dreaming. And whatever you do, that's perfect. And there's a story that my grandmother told me when I was just a small, small girl. That in a faraway land there lived a small boy who dreamed of flying. Every day the boy, whose name was Yuri, would watch hundreds of dragons as he looked out his window. They were flying, flying high into the sky. They flew to the rocky mountains way, way in the distance. No one knew what lay in those far off mountains. Some said they were mountains of gold. Others said it was a place of magic. Or some thought that beyond the mountains was the edge of the world. None of the villagers had ever tried to venture that far, for there were treacherous rivers to cross, deep, deep forests, and of course, sheer cliffs. Each night the little boy wished he could venture out to discover where it was that the dragons went each and every day. But how could he get there, he wondered. It would take many months to ride a horse there. He was much, much too small to walk all that way. The dragons had only to flap their majestic wings. Each day he could hear the beating of their wings, slow and steady, rising and falling to the sounds of their breath as they leapt into the sky. And the sun shone brightly on their glittering scales. So bright he had to close his eyes until he could no longer hear the steady beat of their wings. My grandmother would tell this story in her soft and gentle voice as I lay in bed, tucked up safe and warm. And the young boy, Yuri, would wish and dream each and every night of soaring wings and mountains far, far away. He dreamt that he would one day discover the dragon's secret. Discover the magic that lay deep, deep, deep in the misty mountains. I'm going to follow the dragons, Yuri would tell his brothers. And they'd laugh at him and pull his hair. You can't do that. No one can do that, they'd say. I'm going to follow the dragons and discover the secret of the misty mountains, he'd tell his father. But Yuri's father would only look sad and shake his head. I'm going to discover what's on the top of the mountains, he told his grandmother one day. Yuri waited for her to laugh or scold him, but she only smiled and nodded. Yes, you can go there my dear, she said, and you will need this. Yuri was confused. His grandmother was pointing at the floor. What do you mean, grandmother? Do you mean this rug? Yes, she said. Look at it closely. Yuri had sat on the old rug many, many times, eating snacks and playing cards with his brothers. It was an ancient rug, made from the finest wool, and woven with greens and reds, blues and yellows into beautiful patterns. What do you mean, grandmother? This is surely a beautiful rug. Am I to take it on my journey? Yes, she replied, but you need to look carefully. Can you soften your eyes? Look at the patterns as though you were feeling really sleepy. And then, just before you fall asleep, you may notice something very different. Yuri squinted at the rug with half open eyes and suddenly saw for the very first time it was covered in tiny flying green dragons, each one beautifully woven into the rug. The dragons were flying into the clouds, headed for the Misty Mountains. Yuri looked at his grandmother and she nodded and smiled. This rug was given to me by my grandmother, and her grandmother gave it to her many, many years ago. They all knew the secret of the Misty Mountains, and as you truly believe that you will discover the dragons' purpose, I give this to you. This rug is made with magic. It will take you to the mountains and far beyond, when you are ready to dream that all this is true. Yuri lay on the rug, he whispered to the dragons, I'm ready, tell me your secrets. But the dragons were silent. His grandmother smiled, you must lie very, very, very still, and ask them with all your heart. Close your eyes, quieten your mind, and they will take you there. Yuri lay very, very still, just like you are now. He closed his eyes, he felt the gentle rhythm of his heartbeat. He heard his breath and waited, and waited. And after what seemed like far too long, he thought he felt a gentle breeze on his face. Keep still, don't open your eyes, whispered his grandmother, until you hear the sound of wings. Yuri felt his arms and legs begin to move slightly on the rug, yet he lay as still as he could. It felt as though the ground was shifting beneath him, yet still he kept his eyes closed. And even though he thought he heard banging sounds and roaring sounds that startled him, he remembered his grandmother's words. He kept his eyes shut and lay still, breathing deeply, listening to his heart, until all at once he heard the deep roars and beating wings of many dragons. Yuri half opened his eyes and saw all around him blue sky, filled with fluffy white clouds and hundreds of dragons all flying around him. Yuri saw that the magic rug was carrying him higher, higher and higher into the sky, high above his parents house, high above the village and up, up, up into the clouds. And the higher they flew, the lighter he felt, flying up through the clouds and into brilliant sunlight, feeling warm, feeling safe. And as he flew, he heard his grandmother's voice. I am here with you Yuri, I have flown this way too. You are safe and you are loved. I will always be with you in your heart. You will soon understand the great mystery of the Misty Mountains. Yuri flew with the dragons over fields and villages, rivers and forests, until they had to climb higher and higher into the clouds. The mountains lay below them, ragged and sharp, and they reached from miles and miles to the distance. The dragons suddenly dived down, down and down, and Yuri held tight to his rug as it followed them. Below he saw a waterfall and a golden river. The dragons dived into the river and emerged halfway up the waterfall, and then flew out through the most beautiful rainbow Yuri had ever seen. Grandmother, I'm frightened, he called, but he heard her voice once more. Yuri, you are safe and you are loved. You have come to discover the great mystery, and only by being brave, trusting in yourself, will you know the truth. Are you ready? Yes, Grandma, he replied, and suddenly he too was diving down into the golden river. Yuri held his breath as he flew up the waterfall and then out through all the colours of the rainbow. It took just a moment, but in that very special moment, Yuri knew why the dragons came here each and every day. Gone were all his fears. Yuri knew he could do anything he ever wanted. Gone were all his worries, washed away. He knew he could always trust in himself. And as Yuri breathed in the heavenly feeling of being wrapped in all the colours of the rainbow, he knew they would always remind him that he was safe and loved, and that he could trust and believe in himself. And Yuri travelled many, many times to the Misty Mountains to remember how good it feels to feel safe and loved, and to trust in himself just like you do now. And whenever you see the colours of the rainbow or long to trust and believe in yourself, you will remember this story and this feeling you have right now. Feeling deeply relaxed and safe, and safe to sleep, to sleep now, your eyes feeling relaxed and heavy as your body moves gently to the sleepy sound of dragon wings. And with each and every deep breath, you too can fly to the Misty Mountains. And with each and every deep breath, feeling lighter and lighter, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, you can fly further and further, hearing the voices of those you love in your heart, trusting that it's safe to sleep on your very own magic rug as you fly, fly to your safe place, knowing that you'll awake at the perfect time in the morning, safe and warm, your own bed, ready for a perfect day.
